Countersink Tool

Calculate the Z-depth required to achieve a specific diameter using a countersink or chamfer tool.

°
Enter 0 if the tool is starting on a flat surface.
Required Sink Depth (Z)
0.0000
in

This is the total Z-axis travel from the hole edge.

Technical Reference

Sink Depth is the Z-distance from the top of the hole to the bottom of the chamfer.

The Formula
$Z = \frac{D_{\text{target}} - D_{\text{current}}}{2 \times \tan(\frac{\text{Angle}}{2})}$
Programming Tips
  • For a 90° tool on a flat surface, the Z-depth is exactly half the target diameter.
  • On a 82° tool, the Z-depth is approximately 57% of the diameter change.
  • Always dwell at the bottom of a countersink for a clean, burr-free finish.
Note: Ensure your tool is actually ground to a point. If the tool has a flat tip, you must compensate for that flat.
