Hole size significantly impacts tap life. A smaller hole (higher engagement) increases thread strength but drastically increases the risk of tap breakage.

Imperial (Find Drill):
Drill = D - (0.01299 × % / TPI)
Variables:
  • D: Basic Major Diameter of the thread.
  • %: Desired percentage of thread depth engagement.
  • TPI: Number of threads per inch.
  • Drill: The actual hole diameter.
Tool Note: Most taps perform best between 60% and 75% engagement. Going over 75% offers negligible strength gains but triples the torque required.
