The Engineering Logic
Press fits rely on the elastic deformation of the materials. When you force a larger pin into a smaller hole, the material tries to spring back, creating a gripping pressure ($P$).
$Force = P \cdot \pi \cdot d \cdot L \cdot \mu$
Important Factors
- Surface Finish: Rougher surfaces require more force to start but may "gall" or weld together.
- Wall Thickness: A thin-walled housing will stretch more, resulting in lower press force for the same interference.
- Chamfers: Ensure lead-in chamfers are clean to prevent shearing of the material.
