Engineering Reference

The ISO system of limits and fits is a standardized method for defining tolerances for mating parts.

Common Preferred Fits:
  • H7/g6: Standard clearance (sliding) fit.
  • H7/h6: Locational clearance fit.
  • H7/p6: Standard interference (press) fit.
  • H8/f7: Loose running fit.
The IT Grade

Higher IT numbers (e.g. IT11) mean larger tolerances. Precision machining typically works within IT5 to IT8.

Note: All calculations follow the metric ISO 286-1:2010 standard. Limits shown are in millimeters.
