Weld Distortion Predictor

Estimate transverse shrinkage, longitudinal shrinkage, and angular distortion based on standard fabrication rules of thumb.

Estimated Distortion
Transverse (Width)

0.00

in
Shrinkage across the weld
Longitudinal (Length)

0.00

in
Shrinkage along the weld
Angular Distortion

0.0

°
Pull towards the weld face
Disclaimer: Actual shrinkage depends heavily on heat input, fit-up gaps, clamping force, and welding sequence. These values are empirical estimates for planning purposes.

Why Distortion Happens

When weld metal is deposited, it expands due to the intense heat. As it cools, it contracts. Because it is fused to the cooler base metal, this contraction pulls the surrounding material with it, causing shrinkage and warping.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Pre-bending: Angle parts slightly in the opposite direction of the expected pull before welding.
  • Skip Welding: Use staggered or "stitch" welds to distribute heat evenly.
  • Fewer Passes: One large pass causes less total distortion than several small passes.
