The Physics of Pitch

For a standard 60° thread, the total depth is roughly $0.6 \times \text{Pitch}$. A wall thinner than 1 full thread is physically unstable. This tool uses a safety margin of 3-5 threads to ensure the material can withstand the axial and radial loads of the tapping process.

Note: Form taps create internal radial pressure that scales with thread depth. Fine threads (high TPI) can safely sit closer to edges than coarse threads.
