Taper Geometry
A taper is a conical shape used extensively in tooling (like Morse or CAT tapers) and pipe threads.
Formulas
Angle = 2 × atan((D - d) / 2L)
Taper Ratio = (D - d) / L
Machinist Tips
- Lathe Compound: When setting the compound rest on a manual lathe, you must use the Half Angle (Angle to Centerline), not the total included angle.
- Taper Per Foot (TPF): Commonly used in imperial prints. TPF = (Large Dia - Small Dia) / Length × 12.
