The "Cut Time" Trap

Relying solely on your CAM software's estimated machining time is a guaranteed way to lose money. CAM time rarely accounts for chip-to-chip tool change times, rapid limits, or operator load/unload speed.

Amortizing Setup Time

Setup time must be distributed across the entire batch. If a setup takes 4 hours for a 10-piece run, you are adding 24 minutes of labor cost to every single part.

Material Markup

Don't forget to mark up your material! Most shops add a 15-20% markup on raw material to cover the cost of sourcing, shipping, handling, and the risk of scrap parts.
