Chip Thinning

°
90° = Square shoulder (No thinning)
Adjusted Feed Per Tooth

0.0000

IPT
Factor: 1.00x base feed
Why Use This?

When the radial engagement is less than 50% of the tool diameter, the chip thickness is actually thinner than your programmed feed per tooth.

The Rubbing Problem

If you don't adjust, your "chip" might be thinner than the tool's edge radius, causing it to rub rather than cut, creating heat and rapid tool failure.

Reference Formula (Radial):
F_adj = IPT / (2 * √((ae/D) - (ae/D)²))
Pro Tip: High-feed mills rely entirely on Axial Chip Thinning by using low lead angles (usually 10°-15°).
