Why measure with pins?

Measuring the sharp corners of a dovetail with calipers is inaccurate because the edges are often deburred or rounded. Precision pins provide a fixed tangent point for repeatable measurement.

Machinist's Tip

Always ensure the pins are seated firmly against the flat bottom and the angled wall. Use a small amount of grease to keep pins in place during measurement if necessary.
