Understanding Cutting Power
A machine's spindle motor doesn't just need to spin; it needs the power to push the tool through material. This is determined by the material's Specific Cutting Force ($k_c$ or $P_u$).
Formulas Used
Power = MRR × Specific Force / Efficiency
Torque = (Power × Constant) / RPM
Torque vs. Horsepower
- Horsepower (or kW) is a measure of how fast you can remove material (MRR). High RPM cuts usually require high HP.
- Torque is the actual twisting force. Large diameter tools turning at low RPMs (like a face mill in steel) demand massive torque, even if the total HP is low.
Check Your Dyno Chart: Most CNC spindles do not produce their "Max Rated HP" across the entire RPM band. Consult your machine's torque/power curve to verify it can output the required power at your programmed RPM.
