Included Angle Effects
- Sharper Angle (e.g., 20°): Creates a wider arc cone. Good for low amperages on thin metals. Easier arc starting, but the thin tip melts away quickly at high amps.
- Blunter Angle (e.g., 60°): Creates a narrower, stiffer, and more focused arc cone. Excellent for deeper penetration and longer life at high amperages.
- Truncated Tip (Flat): Snapping off the very sharp tip prevents the point from melting and dropping tungsten inclusions into the weld puddle at high AC/DC amps.
Color Code Reference
| Color | Alloy | Best Application |
|---|---|---|
| Blue | 2% Lanthanated | Universal (AC/DC). Best modern default. |
| Red | 2% Thoriated | DC Steel/SS. (Radioactive dust warning) |
| Grey | 2% Ceriated | Low Amp DC, Pipe, Thin sheet. |
| Green | Pure | AC Aluminum on older transformers only. |
